100 years old and
still going strong
The Great Longstone village Hall
(nee institute) began life in May 1907,
the Village Hall Committee are
organising a party to mark its 100th
Birthday. There'll be treasure hunts
round the village for the younger ones
and trips down memory lane, with a
display of old photographs, clippings
and a rolling film show in the Village
Hall for the rest of us. The movies
show Great Longstone from the 50's
to present day. If you have any old
photographs of Longstone social life
you would like to share for the
day, let us know! Birthday cake and
glasses of bubbly will complete the
party atmosphere. Everyone from
the village is welcome and it all
happens on Saturday 19th May
2007.

UTE Reaches a
Century
When the first issue of Under the Edge
fell through my letterbox I was
delighted, I never thought I would
become quite as fond of it as I have or
that it would become as huge a part of
my life as it has.
Brian Edwards, our well-known artist,
had run community newspapers in
Sheffield and having moved to
Longstone felt it was a good idea for
Great Longstone to have its own paper
at the same time the Reverend Clive
and Harold Richardson were having just
the same thoughts. They all got
together and with the help of many
residents in the village the rest is
history.
Brian offered to get the first issue out
and 630 copies were photocopied by
David Burns at the Print Room and the
trustee band of locals went out to
deliver the first issue.
That first issue must have been a
nightmare; where Brian got his copy
from I don't know but UTE was born
thanks to Brian, Clive, Harold and the
team of deliverers UTE covers all the
villages on our masthead.
Brian retired as Editor when he began
to build his house on Miers Lane and
Sally and Chris Raynor slipped
effortlessly into the role. Time moves
on and so does life and after a couple
of years as Editor Sally advertised that
they wanted to stop, and would a new
editor please step forward.
I offered to do the job and as I was the
only applicant, got it. What have I
got out of being editor of Under the
Edge? I have got a great deal; I know
far more about village life than I did
before, I have met a great many
wonderful people but most of all I
know that between us all we have
produced a newspaper that the
villages really look forward to.
In 2005 I started asking for someone
new to take over the role of editor
but no one came forward and so I
placed a notice in the December
issue of UTE saying it was the last
