Harvest
Revd Clive Thrower writes
Each year we celebrate at this time the harvest of the fields, the work of farmers,
horticulturalists, food processors and those who deliver and sell farm products.
It is right to set aside a time to consider the blessings of our daily bread and
those who baked it, milled the wheat into flour, and the farm worker who first
ploughed, sowed and then reaped the field. We remember too our God, creator
and sustainer of the world and give thanks for all the blessings of this life.
What makes for life is more than the food and drink on our tables, essential
as these are. We need an income; we need housing, heating and the love and
companionship of family, friends and neighbours. Few of us are directly engaged
in the agricultural cycle but we all can bring our harvest of the other factors that
make for a wholesome and satisfying life. As we can remember the agricultural
harvest so too should we remember what we can bring to our families and
neighbours that will make whole their lives. Do give generously to the various
harvest appeals that will resource aid and development to deprived areas of the
world. It is not only the right moral thing to do but also the prudent one. Injustice
and deprivation in far-flung nations has a nasty way of sometimes directly
hurting us in this country.

Bennett, who is backed by guitar and
double bass. Sarah lives in Darley
Dale, but appears around the UK with
her group, and recently appeared at
the Manchester, Southport and Brecon
Jazz Festivals, whilst a special tune
by Chris, called Willow's song, was
featured on Humphrey Lyttleton's radio
programme.
The first half of the forthcoming concert
will be devoted to classics including
bossa nova pieces sung in Brazilian
Portuguese: the second half will be a
contempory composition by Chris
called Astronomer's Guest. This has
a choral theme ideally suited to the
backdrop of St. Giles'. Incidentally
Sarah is multilingual, so she knows
exactly what she is singing! The
concert starts at 7.30pm, coffee, tea
and biscuits are included in the price
of the ticket at £6.50, (schoolchildren
£3).
More Gentle Jazz at
St Giles'
St. Giles' Church is acquiring quite a
name for putting on Jazz Concerts and
it is interesting to note that other
places of worship with unique and
historical environments are beginning
to follow suit. The last two shows have
been sell-outs and all the audiences
have been extremely enthusiastic at
the high-quality entertainment.
Three more stylish concerts are
planned this winter and proceeds will
go towards the upkeep of this fine old
building.
On Saturday 7
th
October, the church
will resound again to the cool sounds
of The Sarah Bennett Quartet who
performed for us just two years ago.
This vocal-led group will perform a wide
repertoire of mostly American music
from composers as diverse as Jobim
and Cole Porter. Her influences include
Sarah Vaughan, Blossom Dearie and
Anita O'Day.
The Sarah Bennett Quartet has a
growing reputation and features
musical director and pianist Chris
