More Gentle Jazz at St.
Giles'.
St Giles' Church is acquiring quite a
name for putting on jazz concerts and
it is interesting to note that other
places of worship with their unique and
historical environments are beginning
to follow suit. The last two shows have
been sell-outs and all the audiences
have been extremely enthusiastic at
the high-quality entertainment.
Three more concerts are planned this
winter and proceeds will go towards
the upkeep of this fine building.
On Saturday, 7
th
October, the church
will resound again to the cool sounds
of The Sarah Bennett Quartet, who
performed for us just two years ago.
This local-led group will perform a
wide repertoire of mostly American
music from composers as diverse as
Jobim and Cole Porter, although Sarah
naturally interprets the songs in her
English accent. Her influences include
Sarah Vaughan, Blossom Dearie and
Anita O'Day.
The Sarah Bennett Quartet has a
growing reputation and features
musical director and pianist Chris
Bennett, who is backed by guitar and
double bass.
Sarah lives in Darley Dale, but travels
around the UK with her group and
recently appeared in Manchester,
Southport and Brecon Jazz Festivals,
whilst a special tune by Chris, called
Support The Great
Longstone Chase.
The race is on Friday 1
st
September.
Will marshals please report to the
cricket pavilion at 6 p.m. We could do
with a few more marshals and a bit of
help to set up the course. If you can
help, please contact me on 640319.
Peter Askew
Willow's Song, was featured on
Humphrey Littleton's radio programme.
The forthcoming concert will be
divided into two parts, firstly jazz
classics including bossa nova pieces
sung in Brazilian Portuguese and then
a contemporary composition by Chris
and called Astronomer's Guest. The
latter has a choral theme ideally suited
to the backdrop of St Giles'.
The concert starts at 7.30pm. Coffee,
tea and biscuits are included in the
price of the ticket at £6.50 (school
children £3). Further information from
Brian Edwards 01629 640752.
