St Giles Church,

Can you help please?
For many years there has been a choir
at St. Giles. Certainly if you have
been in church, you will have noticed
that for most services there is a Choir,
robed in blue and white, who lead the
singing.
In July 2007 the Choir is celebrating
30 years under its current leadership.
It was in 1977 that the previous
Organist left the village, and John
Tarn, Molly Thornhill, Janet Cumming
and Robert Wright undertook to play
the organ at services in St Giles; and
John also took over the job of Choir
Master.
We are going to celebrate this 30
th
Anniversary by holding special
services at 11.15 am and 6.30 pm on
Sunday 15
th
July 2007, and to have a
party in church after the evening
service. So, if you have ever been in
What's in a number?
Revd Clive Thrower writes
I never got that excited about the millennium we had just 6 years ago. I got my
degree from Sheffield University as mathematician cum statistician, many
moons ago now, but what has stayed with me is the idea that numbers are
numbers with no significance one from another, hence 999 is no more interesting
than 1000. if the human species had four fingers on each hand we would have
counted in eights, or octal, so 8 would be 8 in decimal and octal, but 9 in
decimal would be 11 in octal. Which brings me to the issue of the start of a new
year and what significance this has for us. We seem to have a strong desire to
mark the passage of time, perhaps because we can never go backward to
repeat what has been. We capture the past in photographs and recordings to
keep alive the remembrance of past events and the emotions associated with
them. Our calendar of days enable us to focus on particular people or aspects
of life.
We are the past, it has shaped us to be what we are but it does not have to
determine our future. This is at the heart of forgiveness that through it we may
take a new course, a more positive one into the future. Our recollections of
2006 help us to put the year in perspective, help us to lay the past to rest so
that we enter a new year with a new hope. In the confession used in church, we
acknowledge our past failures then come these words "In your mercy forgive
what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall
be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God."
May you find peace from past troubles, new life in living the present to the
full, and confidence to meet whatever may challenge you in the year ahead.
the Choir, why not come to at least
one of the services; and if you haven't
been in the Choir, why not come and
enjoy the occasion anyway? You are
all welcome.
We are producing a history of those
years and would like to invite anyone
to contribute to it. Do you have any
photos or any sound recordings of the
Choir? If so, are you willing to let them
be copied? We are also trying to put
together a written record. Everyone
can help by writing their memories,
anecdotes, or experiences. Our own
records only go back to 1977 so we
would especially appreciate any
information about the time before 1977
as well please.
The deadline for all material is 31
st
March 2007. We need at least a
couple of months to edit your
contributions and to decide on a
suitable format, or formats, for the
record and for a display that will be
put up in church. If you submit
anything after that date we cannot
promise to do it justice, although it will
be copied and placed in an archive.
NB. If you do lend anything, please
make sure that it is properly labelled.
1
Documents should be placed in
an envelope or plastic wallet.
2
Photographs should have your
name written on the reverse side,
taking care not to press too hard.
A soft pencil is often the best thing
to use.
3
Audio and video tapes should be
individually labelled with your
name and the subject matter.
Please also add a note of the
occasion or significance of each item,
and if possible identify people in
photographs.
Thank you in anticipation.
Robert and Janet Cumming
